Earplugs for snoring
Earplugs reduce snoring. They very rarely eliminate it. A well-fitted plug subtracts roughly 20 to 30 decibels; loud snoring can measure well above 50. The remainder is quiet — but it arrives in an otherwise silent room, in irregular bursts, which is precisely the kind of sound human attention is built to flag. Whether earplugs alone will save your nights comes down to that arithmetic, so let’s do it properly.
How loud is snoring, actually?
Louder than people guess, and measured more often than you’d think. In a study published in Sleep that recorded 162 snorers overnight with a calibrated sound meter, typical snoring ran around 45 dB(A) — two-thirds of participants exceeded that level, which the authors associate with disrupting a bed partner’s sleep — and one in seven exceeded 53 dB(A), the threshold used for environmental noise pollution. That is an all-night average at the level of a quiet conversation happening next to your head; the loudest snorers peak far above it, into rival-a-vacuum-cleaner territory.
The number that matters, though, isn’t the average. Snoring is not a hum. It crescendos, stops, restarts, changes pitch when the snorer rolls over. Each of those transitions is a fresh event for the listening brain, and that — not the raw level — is what makes a snore harder to sleep through than steady traffic at the same volume.
How much do earplugs subtract?
Every earplug sold in the US carries a noise reduction rating (NRR) on the packaging — foam plugs top out in the low 30s of decibels, most reusable silicone sits in the 20s. Two caveats before you treat that number as real:
- The label is a lab figure. NIOSH — the US institute that studies occupational hearing protection — is blunt that the NRR often does not reflect the protection a wearer actually gets, and has long recommended derating it. The gap is fit: a foam plug rolled thin, inserted deep, and allowed to expand performs close to its rating; the same plug perched at the canal entrance, which is how most tired people insert one at 11pm, performs far below it.
- Some sound goes around the plug entirely. Above a certain point, sound reaches your inner ear through the bones of the skull. No earplug intercepts that path, which is one reason even perfect insertion never buys you silence.
A useful home version of NIOSH’s fit test: with the plugs in, count out loud while cupping and uncupping your hands over your ears. If your voice changes noticeably when you cup, the seal is poor and you are getting a fraction of the label.
The arithmetic, then
Give earplugs their best realistic case: a genuinely good fit, 25 dB of real attenuation. Against a 55 dB snore, roughly 30 dB still reaches your ear — about the level of a whisper. A whisper doesn’t sound like much until you remember the context: it is now the only sound in the room, it starts and stops unpredictably, and you are lying there listening for it. Subtraction shrank the problem. It did not remove the thing your attention snags on.
When earplugs alone genuinely work
Plenty of the time, honestly — the NHS itself suggests partners of snorers try them. The cases where subtraction alone is enough look like this:
- The snoring is moderate. Take 25 dB from a 45 dB snore and what’s left sits near the threshold of hearing. The arithmetic that fails against a loud snorer succeeds against an average one.
- You fit them properly. Rolled thin, inserted while holding the ear up and back, allowed to expand in place. The difference between a good fit and a lazy one is larger than the difference between brands.
- You aren’t a light sleeper. Someone who sleeps through their own alarm will sleep through a residual whisper. Someone who wakes when the radiator ticks will not.
On brands: disposable foam is the cheapest and highest-rated on paper. What subtraction can’t do, masking can
Here is the piece most earplug advice skips. The residual snore is audible because of contrast: a changing sound against near-silence. You can attack that from the other side — instead of trying to push the snore below your hearing threshold, raise the floor around it. Steady, low-level masking sound (rain, brown noise, ocean) fills the silence the snore was standing out against, and the starts and stops stop registering as events. The snore doesn’t vanish; it stops being the most interesting thing in the room, which for a sleeping brain is what matters. In practice, the best answer for the partner of a genuinely loud snorer is usually one of these two, not earplugs alone:

- Cover privately. Masking audio delivered only to your ears — the snorer hears nothing, and nothing is sealed into your ear canal. If you do sleep in earplugs
Nightly earplug use is safe for most people, with three caveats worth managing rather than dismissing: alarms you genuinely need to hear (smoke alarms and a crying child included — solve it deliberately with a vibrating or bedside alarm), earwax pushed deeper and compacted by nightly insertion, and hygiene — disposable foam is disposable, and reusable silicone needs washing.
